The Physics program at Ontario Tech University leads to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and focuses on the fundamental behaviour of systems in nature, from the smallest particles to dark matter in space. Students study force, motion, light, sound, electricity, magnetism and the structure of matter, with hands-on learning using cutting-edge technology and involvement in faculty research. Students can specialize in Astrophysics, combining mathematics and physics to address large-scale unsolved problems; Computational Physics, developing computational models and simulations; or Nanophysics, applying nanotechnology to energy and sustainability challenges. Graduates can pursue graduate study in Modelling and Computational Science or Materials Science, both offering Master of Science and PhD degrees. A direct-entry co-op option is available (OUAC code DSK for the regular program, DPC for co-op), and students can extend into the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program for a business and management foundation alongside the physics curriculum.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits, including English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and two of Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U). A combined minimum 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required; it is recommended that all four of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and SPH4U be taken. Admission is competitive and the specific average required varies from year to year; students are selected based on school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the program. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Last year's cut-off was 70 per cent, with an expected cut-off in the low 70s.
