Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering (MRE) is a direct-entry Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering program at Smith Engineering, jointly operated by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department. Unlike Smith Engineering's common first-year programs, students are admitted directly into MRE from high school. Coursework begins with MRE-specific courses from the second semester of first year, combined with courses from Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical and Materials Engineering, and includes a four-year sequence of project-based 'Design Spine' courses. Lab courses reflect real-world mechatronics and robotics applications, such as systems integration, heat transfer analysis in micro-electronics, and autonomous robot coding, developed with input from faculty, graduate students, and industry contacts. Students can join extracurricular design teams, including national and international robotics competitions, and may complete a 12 to 16 month paid internship through the Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program, graduating with the Professional Internship designation.
