Overview
This interdisciplinary program, named Indigenous Studies and now offered as Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives, draws together course offerings on Indigenous history, culture, experience, language, and ways of knowing from 14 departments within the Faculty of Arts and Science. It is designed for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, building a foundation in the histories of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples alongside skills such as Indigenous approaches to learning and research. Students develop a broad interdisciplinary knowledge base spanning Indigenous cultures, spirituality, social systems, history, language, and contemporary issues. The plans are administered by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in collaboration with departments across Arts and Science, with full plan and course requirements set out in the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Calendar. Graduates are positioned for careers in education, law, business, policy and governance, and advocacy and social services, working with or on behalf of Indigenous communities.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits humanities and social-science applicants under the Arts admission category (QA), which covers Bachelor of Arts (Honours) plans such as Classics, Classical Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Studies, Politics Philosophy and Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Linguistics, Indigenous Studies, Film and Media, the modern-language plans (German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Spanish and Latin American Studies, World Language Studies, Languages Literatures and Cultures), Jewish Studies, and Environmental Studies (Arts), as well as Economics (listed separately as QAE with identical requirements). Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U is the only mandatory subject, and the remaining five courses may be at either the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement.
