Overview
Software Design is an Honours specialization offered by the School of Computing at Queen's University, leading to a Bachelor of Computing (Honours) degree (Plan Code SODE-S). The 81-unit plan trains students in software architecture, analysis, and evolution, combining core computer science foundations (discrete structures, data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, algorithms) with dedicated software-engineering courses in requirements, quality assurance, human-computer interaction, formal specification, and DevOps/MLOps for software systems in production. Students complete a capstone Information Technology Project (CISC 498) and choose advanced options in software architecture or game architecture, plus further Software Design electives such as game development, web development, database management systems, or artificial intelligence. Combined with electives to a minimum of 120 units, the plan can be paired with a Minor in another subject. Graduates are prepared for careers as software developers, software architects, mobile app developers, web developers, and systems analysts.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Queen's School of Computing admits Computer Science, Software Design, Biomedical Computing, Cognitive Science and Computing, Mathematics & Analytics under the single Computing admission category (QD). Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U, Advanced Functions 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, and three further courses may be at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a mid-80s overall average for this category. Students are admitted to Computing generally and choose their specific specialization, such as Software Design or Cognitive Science, after first year once program-specific prerequisites and enrolment limits are met. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application or portfolio is required for general Computing entry.
