Overview

Physics & Astronomy is offered as a Major, Minor or Specialization within the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physics at Queen's University, administered by the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy, alongside Bachelor of Science (General) and Bachelor of Arts (General) options. Students are admitted to the Faculty of Arts and Science (or Computing) with a common first year before declaring the plan. Coursework in second and third year covers classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, advanced laboratory work, relativity and quantum mechanics; fourth-year courses cover specialized topics including nanoscience, medical physics, lasers, nuclear and particle physics, solid-state physics and general relativity. The department has one of the largest combined research groups in astronomy, astrophysics and astroparticle physics in North America, with opportunities for inter-disciplinary research, including dark matter and neutrino experiments conducted at SNOLAB. A combined Bachelor of Science (Honours)/Master of Science option and a QUIP internship are available.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Queen's Faculty of Arts and Science admits science applicants under the Science admission category (QS), which covers Biology and Cognitive Sciences (QSB), Mathematics and Statistics (QSM) and Physical and Chemical Sciences (QSP) sub-groups — including plans such as Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematical Physics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology-Mathematics, and the Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Environmental Life Sciences and Environmental Toxicology plans. Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need six 4U/4M courses: English 4U and Calculus and Vectors 4U are mandatory, plus two of Biology 4U, Chemistry 4U or Physics 4U chosen to match the intended plan's prerequisites, and two further courses at the 4U or 4M level. Recent admission cycles have required a low-80s overall average for this category. Applicants apply through the OUAC and submit official transcripts; applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied long enough in English, must also meet Queen's English Language Proficiency requirement. No supplementary application is required for general Science entry.
