Community-Engaged Learning in Disability and Physical Activity (DIPA) is offered by Queen's University's School of Kinesiology and Health Studies in partnership with Revved Up, a community exercise program for people experiencing disability. Students complete five required courses, HTLH 210, HLTH 200 or KNPE 255, HLTH 332, KNPE 386, and KNPE 486, either as an in-degree option that counts the courses as electives within an existing degree, or as a stand-alone DIPA certificate noted on the transcript, with three of the five courses taken over and above the regular degree plan. Coursework combines classroom study of disability with supervised community-based practicum placements, primarily at the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies and at a satellite location at Providence Care Hospital, working directly with Revved Up participants. Students develop exercise-prescription and program-assessment skills adapted for people with mobility impairments or developmental disabilities, along with communication and leadership skills, and can work toward core competencies of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's Certified Personal Training designation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have reached Level 2 standing or above (by the end of the Winter term) and hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70 to apply to the Community-Engaged Learning in Disability and Physical Activity (DIPA) in-degree option or certificate. A 2.70 GPA is the minimum eligibility requirement, though the actual admission cut-off may be higher given limited space; successful applicants receive conditional acceptance, confirmed once final Winter term grades are available.
