Program details

Overview

The MA in Classics and Archaeology is a 24-month program offered by the Department of Classics and Archaeology in two fields of study, Classics and Archaeology (requiring Greek and Latin for admission) and Classical Studies and Archaeology (no ancient-language prerequisite), and in two patterns: Pattern I, a thesis of roughly 100 pages with an oral defence, or Pattern II, a Major Research Paper or Project with an accompanying essay, reviewed by two faculty members without an oral defence. Students complete two required professional seminar courses (CLAS 800 and CLAS 802) alongside four to six additional half-year courses depending on field and pattern, and must demonstrate reading proficiency in a modern language such as French, German, or Italian, an ancient language, or equivalent prior coursework. Faculty expertise spans Greek and Roman archaeology, history, language, and literature, and students have opportunities to gain hands-on experience through faculty-supervised archaeological digs around the Mediterranean world. Graduate students in the program are eligible for internal and external awards and fellowships.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a four-year bachelor's degree in Classics or another relevant field with a minimum first-class or high second-class standing (a B+ average). Applicants to the Classics and Archaeology field must have a good knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin; the Classical Studies and Archaeology field has no ancient-language prerequisite. Applicants submit a 5-10 page writing sample as a PDF and provide contact information for two referees, who are not contacted until the application is submitted. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs' English-language proficiency requirements. The application period opens in September, with a February 1 deadline and notification of acceptance by March 1.
