The Master of Arts (MA) in English at Queen's University is offered by the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing through two pathways: a Seminar-Based stream and a Thesis-Based stream. The Seminar-Based MA is the standard 12-month pattern and is recognized by doctoral programs in Canada and abroad; students take an introductory course in professional and pedagogical skills, a year-long research forum, and six seminar courses across the fall, winter, and spring terms, with course selection spanning at least two of three historical periods: medieval to 1660, 1600 to 1900, and 1900 to present. One seminar may be replaced by a Directed Reading course or a graduate course from another Queen's department. The Thesis-Based MA combines seminars with an individual major research essay or hybrid creative-research project. Students may also apply for a literary internship with organizations such as Kingston WritersFest, the Strathy Language Unit, or McGill-Queen's University Press. All students receive funding through grants or teaching assistantships.
