Overview
The Master of Arts (MA) in Global Development Studies at Queen's University provides interdisciplinary graduate training in development research, combining political-economic and cultural approaches to global development. All students enter the course-based stream, which is completed in 10 to 12 months, includes guaranteed funding for one year, and culminates in a Major Research Paper of 50 to 60 pages based on secondary research. Eligible students may apply during their first year to transfer to the thesis-based stream, completed in 18 to 24 months, which culminates in a 75 to 100 page thesis based on original research, often including fieldwork. Students complete six graduate courses in total: four required core courses covering the political economy of development, cultural politics of development, qualitative research design, and a professional seminar, plus two additional graduate courses, at least one of which must be in Global Development Studies. Graduates pursue careers in government, academia, development organizations, journalism, media, teaching, business, and law.
