Overview
This two-year diploma provides technical, analytical and problem-solving training for careers in mechanical engineering, combining foundational engineering principles with practical application and design work. The first year covers mathematics, science and computer-aided design (CAD) alongside core mechanical engineering subjects. In the second year, students choose one of three majors: Design and Analysis (mechanical systems, vibration analysis, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics), Design and Automation (automated manufacturing systems, programmable logic controllers and industrial robotics), or Design and Development (prototyping and product design). The program is nationally accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) and includes a capstone project completed with an industry partner. Graduates may pursue the Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation after two years of relevant work experience. Delivery is in person at Main Campus, and graduates receive a SAIT Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and complete the following courses or equivalents: at least 60% in Math 30-1 or at least 75% in Math 30-2; at least 60% in English Language Arts 30-1 or English Language Arts 30-2; and at least 60% in Physics 20 and Chemistry 20, or at least 60% in Science 30. SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta. Applicants educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide proof of meeting program admission requirements through an international document assessment.
