Overview
This 12-week certificate program trains students for entry-level roles in railway operations, covering train assembly, rail car movement and switching, the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) and related safety systems, and the mechanical aspects of rail cars including air brake and communication systems. Instruction combines on-campus classes and labs at Point Trotter Campus with field trips to nearby industrial sites and hands-on practice in SAIT's private mini rail yard. Employment in the field can require passing medical exams, including vision, hearing and drug tests, and a security screening. Graduates receive a SAIT Railway Conductor certificate; SAIT's most recent annual alumni survey reported a 71% graduate employment rate. The program accepts international applicants but does not currently meet the field of study requirement for the Post-Graduation Work Permit.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and complete the following courses or equivalents: at least 50% in Math 20-1, 20-2 or 20-3, and at least 50% in Grade 12 English. A class 5 driver's licence is required, in alignment with industry expectations. Applicants educated outside Alberta may meet requirements through SAIT-accepted high school course equivalents, and applicants educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide an international document assessment confirming they meet the program's admission requirements.
