The Sheet Metal Worker program is a four-year apprenticeship offered by SAIT in partnership with Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training authority, leading to an advanced diploma plus journeyperson status, with dual certification in Gasfitter B and the Red Seal-endorsed Sheet Metal Worker trade. Apprentices learn to design, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products used across industries, working with materials such as black and galvanized steel, copper, brass, nickel, stainless steel, and aluminum to produce items including HVAC systems, metal cabinets, electrical panels, and roofing components. Each of the four 12-month periods requires a minimum of 1,500 hours of on-the-job training and ten weeks of classroom instruction, progressing from safety, tools, duct construction, and residential HVAC in year one to advanced fabrication, GMAW welding, industrial HVAC, and refrigeration by year four. Classroom instruction is delivered through blended learning, with lab work on campus. Applicants must be Alberta residents or have their primary place of work in Alberta, and must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or valid work-permit holders.
