The Automotive Service Technician program is a 36-week certificate at Saskatchewan Polytechnic that prepares students for entry-level work in automotive repair and maintenance. Coursework covers body and trim, brakes and chassis, charging systems, ignition and starting systems, transmissions and drive lines, electronics and electrical systems, engine repair, fuel and emission systems, and general shop procedures. Instruction combines classroom theory with hands-on shop practice using automotive equipment and tools. The program is delivered on campus at the Moose Jaw and Saskatoon campuses, with a September intake for domestic students. Graduates earn a certificate and are prepared to pursue apprenticeship registration as an automotive service technician. Admission requires Grade 12 standing, along with physical mobility, moderate lifting capability, manual dexterity, and a valid driver's license, since students operate and road test vehicles as part of their training.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need Grade 12 and must meet Saskatchewan Polytechnic's English Language Requirement. Because the program involves operating and road testing motor vehicles, applicants must hold a valid driver's license and be physically mobile, capable of moderate lifting, and have good manual dexterity. Applicants who do not meet the Grade 12 requirement may qualify through ACCUPLACER testing with minimum scores of 250 in Arithmetic, 247 in Reading, and 241 in Writing.
