Overview
Welding Applied Certificate is a 20-week hands-on trades program offered at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Regina campus, preparing students for entry-level welding careers across a range of industries. Instruction covers general shop practice and shop safety, oxy/acetylene fusion welding, cutting processes, gas metal arc welding, and shielded metal arc welding, building the foundational technique needed to operate welding equipment and perform basic welding operations safely. Credits earned in the program may count toward apprenticeship training through the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), giving graduates a route toward journeyperson certification. Graduates who go on to achieve journeyperson status also have the option to pursue Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Bachelor of Applied Management degree, completed part-time or remotely over two additional years, leveraging their trade education and work experience toward a bachelor's credential. Graduates typically find employment in refineries, construction, pulp and paper mills, manufacturing or processing plants, mines, or repair shops, with trade time and academic credit potentially available for those who register in the trade upon employment.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 10. Applicants who do not hold the standard academic credential can qualify via the ACCUPLACER placement test, with minimum cut scores of 250 in Arithmetic and 237 in Reading, or through 15 approved post-secondary credits. The programme applies Saskatchewan Polytechnic's institution-wide English Language Requirement: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with 5.0 per band, TOEFL iBT 81 overall with 19 per skill, PTE Academic 63 overall with 50 per component, Duolingo English Test 110, or CAEL 60 overall with 50 per component. Admission runs First Qualified/First Admitted, with applications opening September 1 each year; delivery of this program is subject to needs assessment rather than a fixed intake.
