Overview
The Foundations in Rural Data Science Certificate introduces students to one of today’s fastest-growing fields through a blend of analytical, technical, and place-based learning. This two-term, 30-credit program builds core skills in data science, computer
programming, calculus, statistics, and research methods while connecting coursework to real applications in rural, remote, and
Indigenous community contexts. Students learn how data is collected, cleaned, analyzed, and communicated, and explore how data-driven insights support environmental, community, and scientific decision-making.
The certificate is designed for learners who want to explore data science or prepare for advanced study in pathways such as data
science, computer science, mathematics, and geospatial technologies. Flexible electives allow students to tailor the program to future academic or career goals. Graduates may continue into the Associate of Science Degree, ladder into related Selkirk programs, or transfer to degree-level data science programs at other institutions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need high-school graduation or equivalent, English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, or ENGL 60 at a minimum of 60%, and Pre-Calculus 12 (or equivalent) at a minimum of 60%. No IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized language-test score is published. Applicants without Pre-Calculus 12 may still be admitted if they complete a skills assessment and upgrade their math readiness. All applicants must complete a questionnaire assessing computer skills, since basic digital competency in file management, online research and productivity software is necessary for success; prior experience with spreadsheets, introductory statistics, programming, or Python micro-credentials strengthens an application though it is not required. A complete application includes official secondary and any post-secondary transcripts, the application form, and the computer-skills questionnaire; interviews may be requested depending on assessment results.
