Overview
Students engage in a variety of classroom and shop activities. Theoretical principles of construction are learned in the classroom, while the majority of the time is spent in the shop where students learn and gain mastery of practical carpentry skills. Early activities include the fabrication of small projects where students learn safe practices, proper tool use and fundamental construction techniques. Gradually, students build structures of increased complexity that simulate real-world construction scenarios. Students learn to lay out buildings and to construct concrete formwork, floors, walls, roofs, and stairs in compliance with BC Building Code standards.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry requires graduation from a British Columbia senior secondary school or equivalent, plus Workplace Math 11 or Selkirk's AUD Math 46 at a minimum of 60%. Mature applicants aged 19 or over without secondary graduation may be considered if working toward at least Grade 10, including English 10 and Mathematics 10, with Grade 12 preferred. All applicants must complete the College Readiness Tool, a computerized placement test in reading, writing and mathematics, after submitting their application; no IELTS, TOEFL or other English-proficiency score is published. Applicants must also be physically fit for the trade, with good manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, balance and the ability to work at heights and in adverse weather. An interview, in person or by phone, with the school chair or a designate may be required, though the result does not count toward the admission decision. Intakes run in Fall and Winter, and admitted students pay a refundable $100 tool deposit at the start of the program.
