Program details

Overview

The Correctional Studies Certificate is for individuals who are interested in working within the correctional system, and also for students who wish to focus their criminology undergraduate studies on courses that relate to correctional practice and theory. You'll take courses in restorative justice, criminology, sentencing, Indigenous justice, and more.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Correctional Studies is a declared certificate rather than a separately admitted program: applicants must already be admitted to Simon Fraser University, or be in the process of being admitted, and must have completed CRIM 241 with a final grade of C- or better before declaring. Students must maintain a 2.25 cumulative grade point average to remain enrolled in upper-level criminology courses, and graduation from the certificate requires a minimum 2.25 CGPA, 2.25 upper-division GPA, and the same thresholds calculated on criminology coursework alone. No language-test scores or other admission conditions are stated on the certificate page itself; because entry depends on prior SFU admission, English-language proficiency follows SFU's general undergraduate scale (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0), and Canadian secondary applicants must otherwise meet SFU's general Grade 12 course and 70% English-grade requirements.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
