Program details

Overview

Primarily aimed at undergraduates and criminal justice professionals, though open to all, this certificate builds a basic theoretical and descriptive foundation in criminology. Those who already hold a bachelor's degree are directed instead toward the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Criminology. Coursework covers criminal law, the justice system, and the psychology and sociology that underlie criminal behaviour, giving graduates an understanding of the complexities behind illegal behaviour and society's responses to it.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Students are eligible to apply for the Criminology General Certificate once they have been admitted to Simon Fraser University, or are in the process of being admitted, and have completed one of CRIM 101, CRIM 131 or CRIM 135 with a final grade of C- or better. After meeting these conditions, applicants must apply in writing to the School of Criminology's advisor for formal program declaration. To continue in the certificate, students must maintain a 2.25 cumulative grade point average; falling below this threshold blocks enrolment in any upper-division CRIM course. No language-test scores, portfolio or interview requirements are stated on the certificate page. Because entry depends on prior SFU admission, English-language proficiency follows SFU's general undergraduate scale, e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no section below 4.0 (tests from 21 January 2026).

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
