Overview
This certificate builds foundational knowledge of labour rights and how work is regulated. It introduces labour law and collective bargaining, and examines working people and labour movements, both in Canada and internationally, as areas of study. Coursework includes labour and the environment, unfree labour and modern slavery, and the politics of labour.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Students may declare the certificate after successfully completing one Labour Studies course — either LBST 100 (Equality and Inequality at Work) or LBST 101 (Work and Workers' Rights) — by applying to the Undergraduate Advisor in the Labour Studies Program. The certificate requires a minimum of 18 units, including LBST 201 (Workers in the Global Economy, with LBST 101 strongly recommended as preparation) and one of LBST 309 (Labour and Collective Bargaining) or LBST 313 (Introduction to Canadian Labour Law), with remaining units drawn from an approved cross-departmental elective list; some electives carry their own 30- or 45-unit standing prerequisites. No specific cumulative GPA, English-language test score, interview or portfolio requirement is published for declaring or completing this certificate beyond SFU's standard undergraduate admission and course-enrolment rules.
