Materials Science is a Master of Science program offered jointly by Trent University and Ontario Tech University, combining coursework with a research thesis. The program covers the broad, multi-disciplinary study of materials science, aiming to understand, predict, and apply the properties of matter, and allows students to pursue in-depth study of a particular problem with an emphasis on theory or experiment. Degree requirements include a 0.5-credit core course (MTSC 6000H), two elective courses totalling 1.0 credit with at least one drawn from a specified list of graduate courses, and a non-credit course (MTSC 6100H) completed before the thesis defence. Additional one-term electives acceptable for graduate credit may be taken with a minimum 70% final grade, and a fourth-year undergraduate course may count as an elective with supervisor and program director approval. Students meet with a supervisory committee, drawn from faculty at both institutions, within the first six months of registration and at least once every twelve months afterward. Students are normally admitted once a year for studies beginning in September.
