This program is a research doctorate (Ph.D.) in Practical Philosophy at the Universite de Sherbrooke, offered at the main Sherbrooke campus and the Longueuil campus, with admission in the fall and winter terms. The 90-credit, full-time curriculum develops research, communication, methodological, ethical, and professional competencies so that graduates become specialists in their chosen field of philosophical research. Students learn to identify a problem suited to philosophical treatment, theorize and critique it, present it to peers and non-specialist audiences while emphasizing the originality of their approach, and situate it within its historical and philosophical context while proposing constructive solutions that account for the broader social context. They also develop the methodological and ethical judgment to select appropriate research methods, draw on relevant findings from other disciplines, and identify the ethical stakes of their research. The program culminates in an original doctoral thesis and trains candidates to work autonomously on research. Admission to the ethics-and-applied-politics pathway is presently suspended; other pathways remain open.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a research-stream master's degree in philosophy (or equivalent) with a minimum cumulative average of 3.0 out of 4.3 or equivalent academic standing, a good command of spoken and written French, reading ability in English, and, where relevant to the candidate's research, sufficient knowledge of a third language. Applicants without a master's in philosophy must complete a 30-credit preparatory program; admission to the ethics-and-applied-politics pathway is currently suspended. Non-francophone applicants must take a French-language placement test and may be required to complete supplementary French coursework depending on the result.
