This program leads to a Master of Science in Physics, a 45-credit degree offered at the University of Sherbrooke's main Sherbrooke campus, available full-time or part-time, with admission in the fall, winter, and summer terms (the quantum pathway admits in fall and winter only). It offers two pathways: a research-based pathway with a 36-credit core of supervisory-committee meetings, a research seminar, two research-activity courses, and an 11-credit thesis (mémoire), plus 9 option credits; and a Quantum Science and Technology pathway with a 24-credit core covering quantum-technology business models, project management, quantum information and computing, and a 9-credit specialty project, plus 21 option credits drawn from courses such as quantum algorithms, superconducting circuits, mesoscopic physics, and condensed-matter physics. The program deepens general knowledge of physics and introduces research in condensed-matter and quantum-computing physics — including electronic properties of advanced materials, superconductors, magnetic systems, and quantum-computing hardware and algorithms — through the university's Institut quantique. Admission requires an undergraduate degree in physics or its equivalent, with the quantum pathway also open to Quantum Information Science graduates who have completed 30 credits of physics coursework including electricity and magnetism.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:2.70 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in physics or its equivalent, with a cumulative average of at least 2.7 on a 4.3 scale, or equivalent academic results; the Faculty may nonetheless admit a candidate who does not meet this requirement, in which case it may impose additional coursework. For the research-based pathway, candidates must secure a qualified faculty supervisor before applying; candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in Quantum Information Science may also be admitted to this pathway if they have completed 30 credits of physics (PHQ) coursework, including Electricity and Magnetism (PHQ224). Required documents include university transcripts, three letters of recommendation submitted via the confidential-report form from a professional email address (personal addresses such as Gmail or Hotmail are not accepted), a letter of intent/motivation, and a curriculum vitae following the department's template.
