This program leads to a Master in Physiotherapy (M.Pht.), a combined first- and second-cycle degree comprising 144 credits over four years of full-time study at the University of Sherbrooke's health campus in Sherbrooke, with admission in the fall term only. The curriculum progresses through foundational biomedical and rehabilitation sciences into musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory clinical approaches, building clinical reasoning through problem-based and case-based learning in small groups alongside hands-on skills training with real patients. Students complete six clinical placements totalling close to 1,200 hours across varied practice settings, about 175 hours beyond the minimum Canadian requirement, with the option of a selective placement — for example in management, research, or global health — in the fourth year, plus elective courses in sport, vestibular, perineal, cardiorespiratory, or manual-therapy topics. It trains graduates to evaluate patients presenting a physical impairment or disability, establish a clinical diagnosis within physiotherapy's scope of practice, and design and deliver an intervention plan aimed at optimal functional outcomes. Admission requires a Quebec DEC in Health Sciences or an equivalent qualification and passage of the online Casper test in French; the program is limited to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who can show Quebec residency.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission proceeds through several quotas: a Quebec CEGEP-category quota for DEC holders with fewer than 44 university credits in the same program, a Quebec university-category quota for those with 45 or more university credits, a quota for residents of other Canadian provinces with at least 75 university credits, and a quota for Quebec First Nations and Inuit candidates. General entry requires a DEC in Health Sciences, a DEC in Science, Letters and Arts, an International Baccalaureate, a DEC in Physiotherapy Techniques, or a DEC combined with specified prerequisite courses in cell biology, general and solution chemistry, differential and integral calculus, mechanics, and electricity and magnetism; all applicants must pass the online Casper test in French. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with a CEGEP diploma plus at least 45 university credits earned in a normal full-time course of study in the same degree program. All applicants must have completed a human-biology or evolution-and-diversity-of-life course before starting, hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, and show proof of Quebec residency. All admitted candidates must demonstrate strong French proficiency, either through an exemption or by reaching CEFR level C1 (score of at least 500 out of 699) across all four fundamental competencies on a recognized test; clinical placements additionally require proof of immunization against specified infectious diseases.
