Program details

Overview

This bachelor's program at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue trains students in video game creation, delivered on the university's Montreal campus. Students choose one of three concentrations — art, design, or playability programming — allowing them to focus their studies on a specific area of game development while building a shared foundation in creative and technical practice. Coursework centers on large-scale interdisciplinary projects that bring together students across concentrations to design and build games collaboratively, developing skills in creativity, critical thinking, autonomy, communication, and project management. The curriculum blends theoretical study of games as a medium with hands-on production work, mirroring the collaborative structure found in professional game studios. The program suits students aiming for careers in the video game industry in artistic roles such as concept art and visual design, design roles shaping game mechanics and player experience, or technical roles focused on gameplay programming. It is intended for those seeking a specialized, practice-based bachelor's education centered specifically on games rather than broader digital media or computer science training.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Standard entry is a Québec DEC or equivalent; UQAT also admits on a university base (a minimum of 30 university credits with a cumulative average above 2.3/4.3) or on an experience base (age 21 or over, with at least two years of paid work in a video-game-related field, attested by a CV and an employer letter). Every applicant must submit the concentration-specific supporting documents set out in the programme's selection criteria at the time of application, and some may be called to interview. As UQAT's own admission page states no separate language test for this programme, all candidates must instead satisfy UQAT's institutional French-proficiency policy. Places are limited. Applicants to the Gameplay Programming or the technical-art stream of the Art concentration must also have passed CEGEP course 201-NYC-05 (Linear Algebra and Vector Geometry); those who have not may take UQAT's make-up course MAT1005, which must be completed before enrolling in PGJ1204.

Application Details

Application Deadline: UQAT's admission page states only that online applications open each term - September for Fall, 1 March for Winter and June for Summer - without giving a closing date for any of its bachelor's programmes (Mining Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Digital/3D/Video Game Creation, Social Work). No separate international deadline, and no programme-specific deadline for engineering or digital-creation programmes, is published on the general admission, international-student, or engineering-school pages; UQAT directs both domestic and international applicants to contact the registrar or the relevant program office for exact timing. The university does not describe its admission as rolling in these terms, but no fixed closing date for the 2026-2027 cycle appears anywhere checked. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
