Program details
Overview
Food Science is a major within the University of Guelph's Bachelor of Science degree, applying chemistry, physics, and microbiology to food processing and product development. Coursework covers food chemistry, food microbiology, food processing, and the maintenance of food safety and quality, preparing students to develop new food products and help ensure the safety of existing ones. The standard program is a four-year, 20-credit degree; an optional five-year co-operative education stream, totalling 22 credits, adds four paid work terms integrating professional work experience with academic study. Students use laboratory and processing facilities for hands-on coursework in food product development and analysis. The Department of Food Science also offers a related Certificate in Food Science, available to Guelph undergraduates and through Open Learning, concentrating on food chemistry, analysis, microbiology, and processing. Graduates of the major pursue roles in food product development, food safety and quality assurance, food processing operations, and related regulatory and research positions across the food industry.
