Food Science, offered by McGill's Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Macdonald Campus, is a chemistry-based, multidisciplinary program covering how food is made safer, more appealing, and longer-lasting, drawing on microbiology, physics, biochemistry, sensory analysis, and engineering. Students choose between two options: Food Chemistry or Food Science. Coursework includes statistical methods, food processing, food microbiology, and analysis of food toxins and toxicants. The program can be complemented with minors such as Agribusiness Entrepreneurship, Health Geography, and International Development. Graduates pursue careers in the food industry, flavour industry, food safety and quality, technical sales and marketing, food biotechnology, and research in university, government, or private-sector settings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Quebec CEGEP applicants to Food Science need Biology I, Chemistry I and II, Math I and II, and Physics I, II and III from a previous DEC, or the equivalent courses under the New Science or Arts & Science DEC. Applicants presenting all prerequisites generally have an advantage in a competitive year, but a minimum of three prerequisites — Math I plus any two science prerequisites — is still considered for admission, with any missing course added onto the McGill program. Applicants completing the Sciences, lettres et arts DEC are eligible for the program and are not disadvantaged in review for missing prerequisites, though the missing coursework is completed at McGill alongside the program's own requirements. For September 2026 entry McGill sets a minimum overall R-Score of 25.0 and a minimum core R-Score of 25.0 in the math/science prerequisite courses, recalculated for each admission cycle.
