Program details

Overview

Building Engineering Technology (221.C0) is a three-year career Diploma of Collegial Studies at Vanier College centred on the mechanical side of buildings: mechanics, thermodynamics, applied mathematics, and systems design, applied to electrical, ventilation, temperature-control, and refrigeration systems. Students learn how these systems are installed, operated, and maintained across different types of structures, building toward technical roles in building operations. The program includes a compulsory internship in the final semester, and students can additionally join the Work-Study program for two further paid summer placements, giving repeated real-world exposure before graduation. Admission runs in both the autumn and winter and requires advanced secondary mathematics (TS or SN sequence) plus specific secondary science courses. Graduates become eligible for professional membership with bodies such as the OTPQ and ASHRAE, and the program page notes that roughly one in five graduates goes on to university, sometimes with advanced-standing credit. It suits students aiming at careers in consulting engineering, building-maintenance supervision, HVAC manufacturing or sales, or municipal and governmental building inspection.
