This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or International Bachelor of Arts (iBA) in Professional Translation / Traduction professionnelle, offered full-time or part-time at the bilingual Glendon Campus, with entry in Fall only for first-year and upper-year students. Students combine language, culture and communication study to develop skills in translation, writing, editing, localization and intercultural communication between English and French. The program includes credited internships in the private or public sector, practicum courses, and participation in translation conferences and competitions. Graduates pursue careers in translation, communications, localization, government, publishing and other bilingual fields. The program suits bilingual students who want applied, practicum-based training in professional translation rather than a general language or literature degree. Coursework covers translation theory alongside practical skills in terminology research, revision and the use of translation technology.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma applicants need 4U English (ENG4U, EAE4U or equivalent), 4U French, and four additional 4U or M courses, with an academic average in the low-to-mid 70s for admission and a final average of 70% required to maintain the offer; similar bilingual French requirements apply across other Canadian and international credentials. Completion of senior-level French is mandatory for all applicants regardless of credential type. Entry is available for Fall only, for first-year and upper-year students; Winter and Summer entry are not offered. Unless exempt, applicants must meet York's undergraduate English proficiency minimums: IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 88, PTE Academic 60, CAEL 60, or Duolingo 120.
