PhD in Earth & Space Science

York's PhD in Earth & Space Science is a multidisciplinary research program associated with the Centre for Research in Earth & Space Science (CRESS). Students work alongside peers from backgrounds including engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science, with opportunities for interdisciplinary research arising from the program's proximity to the departments of Physics & Astronomy, Engineering, and Chemistry. Research laboratories include facilities for space engineering and planetary exploration, remote sensing, high-precision positioning and navigation, geospatial information technology, atmospheric measurement, and simulation and climate modelling. Students can join atmospheric science projects run with Environment and Climate Change Canada, and space science projects such as OSIRIS-REx, Phoenix, and SWIFT, involving collaborators including the Canadian Space Agency, ESA, NASA, and JPL. Research areas span atmospheric modelling, chemistry, computer science, earth science geomatics, mathematics, physics and astronomy, and remote sensing and space observation. The degree is completed through a dissertation and an oral examination, offered full-time, with Fall, Winter, and Summer entry points.
