Overview
This graduate program takes an interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues, bringing together the social sciences, humanities, arts and natural sciences. The Master in Environmental Studies (MES) is a self-directed program centred on an individual Plan of Study, allowing students to design a program of coursework matched to their research interests. A PhD in Environmental Studies is also offered. Within the MES, specialized options include a Planning stream leading to professional planning certification, a joint MES/JD with Osgoode Hall Law School, a Diploma in Business and the Environment, and a Diploma in Environmental/Sustainability Education. The program is based in York University's Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change and operates within the Faculty of Graduate Studies framework, with students working alongside faculty supervisors to develop individualized programs of study addressing environmental, social and sustainability questions.
