Overview
The Commercial Kitchen Assistant Certificate of Completion provides existing curriculum for Prep Cook training and help students as they bridge to employment. Students who wish to take the Professional Cook program, but are not quite ready can take this program and become familiar with techniques, terminology, workplace expectations and curriculum in order to succeed later on.

Admission Requirements: Beyond Selkirk College's general admission requirements, entry to this program is decided through an intake interview with the instructor rather than an academic transcript or English-language test score; no IELTS, TOEFL or similar score is published. Applicants must show they can function safely in a commercial kitchen setting, with no behavioural or emotional needs that would significantly interfere with their own learning and safety or that of others, and must demonstrate commitment to learning. A complete file includes the interview and either a recommendation from a Selkirk Academic Upgrading & Development instructor or a referral from a community agency, another college, or a high school. Selkirk caps each class at 12 students and balances it by support need: no high-needs students, up to 2 to 4 moderate-needs students, about 30% of capacity, and 8 to 10 low-needs students, about 70%. The program normally runs a single Fall intake and, as of this record, is not accepting applications for the 2026/27 academic year.
