BA/BS in Emergency Medical Aid

Objective(s) of a study programme: To train professional bachelors in emergency medicine who are able to provide first aid and critical/emergency care to persons of different age groups, depending on the nature of the injuries sustained and the degree of impairment of vital functions, and to transport the sick and the injured appropriately to a medical facility, ensuring adequate support of vital functions. Learning outcomes: Apply the acquired general college knowledge to professional activities. Appreciates the psychology of age ranges and the cultural, psychosocial, anatomical and physiological characteristics of people/patients. Participates in emergency medicine and other biomedical research leading to professional development. Performs qualitative and quantitative biomedical research. Assesses the accident scene, transports casualties independently or with the medical team, triages them, triages them if necessary, and directs the provision of medical assistance when necessary, in accordance with the current emergency response algorithms. Provides first aid in an emergency, taking into account the nature of the trauma and the degree of impairment of vital functions. Apply special medical interventions, including the use of medical equipment. Communicates and cooperates constructively with patients, casualties, colleagues, other medical professionals and other persons and their environment. Base professional activities on professional ethics, common human values and citizenship. Applies knowledge of general erudition, expresses thoughts in correct oral and written Lithuanian and foreign languages, collects and organises information responsibly. Think analytically, critically and creatively, reflecting on their own learning and professional development needs in order to improve their professional performance and personal selfdevelopment on a value-based basis. Activities of teaching and learning: The study period is 3 years (6 semesters). The subjects are evenly distributed in each semester (6-7 subjects in each semester). Examinations are spread evenly throughout the semesters. The final thesis is submitted and defended in semester VI. The programme includes 3 internships and 3 free electives. The Emergency Medical Care study programme provides for the use of various forms of classes (lectures, exercises, seminars, individual work with the student by the lecturer, independent work by the student) and methods (discussions, group work, project work, case studies, tests, etc.) to enable students to achieve the results of their studies. Methods of assessment of learning achievements: Students' achievements are evaluated on a ten-point system in accordance with the approved Procedures for the Evaluation of Student Achievements. A summative (cumulative) assessment system shall be used for student reports. The assessment of study results is based on SP + CP + EP, where SP = independent work grade (20 % of the final grade); CP = average of grades in control assignments (20 % of the final grade); EP = examination grade (60 % of the final grade). Distinctive features of a study programme: Employment opportunities for specialists - training emergency medical technicians will reduce mortality from injuries, help to resolve different patient health problems more quickly, and provide patients with skilled emergency care faster. The need for an emergency medical technician is triggered by the ever improving quality of life of people, the modern level of medical services and the level of development of personal and public health, and the changed attitudes towards emergency care at the scene of a disaster, which require highly qualified emergency medical technicians. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: Graduates can work in ambulance stations, admissions departments, intensive care units, primary health care facilities, outpatient clinics, hospices, nursing homes, sanatoriums, old people's homes, orphanages, children's and young people's homes, family health clinics and addiction centres. Access to further study: Graduates of this study programme can continue their studies in higher education institutions offering programmes in biomedical sciences.
