BA/BS in Orthopaedycs Technology

Objective(s) of a study programme: To train a professional bachelor's degree holder in medical technology who can design, manufacture and fit individual orthopaedic appliances and work independently in a variety of orthopaedic companies.To provide students with the modern education and competences necessary for the professional activity of an orthopaedic technologist. The study programme enables the student to get acquainted with the current opportunities, trends and perspectives of the orthopaedic technical sector in Lithuania and abroad. Learning outcomes: Apply the acquired general college knowledge to professional activities.Assesses patient health and orthopaedic technical needs.Analyses health law and professional ethics documents.Is able to prepare the patient for a medical examination or procedure and to select the appropriate instruments.Evaluates domestic and foreign orthopaedic analogues.Assesses the needs and capabilities of the individual in terms of the choice of orthopaedic appliances.Is able to prepare the workplace, work with equipment and medical devices, assess the working environment, understand the principles of operation and maintenance of medical devices and apply the principles of occupational safety.Design an orthopaedic technical instrument.Understand and apply the principles of quality control and analyse the influence of various factors on performance.Plan and organise a continuous work process in an orthopaedic business enterprise or its units. Communicates and conveys information, disseminates professional experience and educates the public. Able to communicate professional knowledge to colleagues and to advise healthcare professionals and patients within the scope of his/her professional competence. Activities of teaching and learning: The study period is 3 years (6 semesters). The subjects are evenly distributed in each semester (6-7 subjects in each semester). Examinations are spread evenly throughout the semesters. The final thesis is submitted and defended in semester VI, and the programme includes 3 internships. The study programme in Orthopaedic Technology provides for the use of various forms of classes (lectures, tutorials, seminars, individual work of the teacher with the student, independent work of the student) and methods (discussions, group work, project work, case studies, tests, etc.), which will enable students to achieve the results of their studies. Methods of assessment of learning achievements: Students' achievements are evaluated on a ten-point system in accordance with the approved Procedures for the Evaluation of Student Achievements. A summative (cumulative) assessment system shall be used for student reports. The assessment of study results is based on SP + CP + EP, where SP = independent work grade (20 % of the final grade); CP = average of grades in control assignments (20 % of the final grade); EP = examination grade (60 % of the final grade). Distinctive features of a study programme: The Orthopaedic Technology study programme is the only one of its kind in Lithuania. Orthopaedic Technology is a professional study programme that meets the needs of specialists in specific fields related to medical technology. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: An orthopaedic technologist can work in both public and private healthcare, medical, sports and rehabilitation institutions, companies that manufacture medical and rehabilitation equipment and compensatory technology for people with disabilities, and orthopaedic companies that manufacture orthopaedic splints and prostheses. Independently carry out the practical activities of an orthopaedic technologist. Access to further study: Graduates can work in a profession that is regulated in the list of professions in accordance with the legislation and instructions of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania. Graduates of the Orthopaedic Technology programme will be able to work independently or in a team of specialists in all levels of health care institutions licensed to provide radiology services, as well as in scientific biomedical laboratories, health care and educational institutions.
