Civil engineering here is framed around the design, construction and upkeep of fixed structures and public works: bridges, roads, airports, flood defences and similar infrastructure. The course is built to give students proficiency across the range of technical disciplines that kind of work demands.
Graduates are prepared to take on technical, economic, legal and managerial responsibility within the construction industry, with employers spanning contractors, consultants, local authorities, government bodies and academic institutions. Teaching methods mix hands-on lab sessions, trips into the field, studio-style design classes, lectures, tutorials and visits to actual sites, kept deliberately close to current industry practice, with assessment through exams and coursework including reports and a final project.
Entry requires three A-level subjects plus one subsidiary-level subject (or an equivalent combination) at the Higher School Certificate Examination, normally including maths and physics; holders of the DUST diploma or an equivalent may be admitted directly into third year. Graduates can progress into the university's top-up BEng (Hons) or Masters in Civil Engineering.
