This certificate offers a professional-development pathway for those teaching, or wishing to teach, within a polytechnic, applied-skills learning environment. Study begins with foundational teaching and learning skills before moving into assessment and instructional strategies, the use of technology in teaching, facilitating online learning, and professional reflective practice, delivered through active and applied learning methods that mirror the experiential model used across polytechnic programs.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: BCIT sets this program's English requirement at Category 2 — English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent, which BCIT also satisfies with IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 4.5 (no section below 3.5), PTE Academic 60, Duolingo 120, or CAEL 70, per BCIT's institution-wide English Language Proficiency page. No prior academic credential or prerequisite course is required to enrol in the foundational course POLY 1005; a certificate of completion or the course itself is needed before registering in other POLY courses. BCIT recommends applicants hold high-school graduation or equivalent, be able to commit 2 to 4 hours weekly beyond class time, and have either current or recent post-secondary teaching experience or, failing that, at least three years of post-secondary or trades training or field experience combined with an intention to teach. Applicants must formally declare the program through the Education Planner BC system. International students may take this program by online delivery only, and it does not meet the field-of-study requirement for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
Application Details
Start Date:January, April and September
Application Deadline:BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
