Program details

Overview

This certificate builds the skills needed to work as a technical writer, with an emphasis on clear writing, sound structure, and logical, audience-specific organization. Technical writers are called on by engineering, research and production teams for work ranging from procedure and instruction manuals through to grant applications and proposals, helping to raise productivity, cut errors, improve safety, and increase customer satisfaction.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: BCIT places the Technical Writing Associate Certificate in Category 2 for English proficiency: English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent. Under BCIT's institute-wide English Language Proficiency policy, applicants who instead sit a standardized test in place of the high-school course meet Category 2 with IELTS Academic 6.5 and no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 4.5 with every section at least 3.5 (legacy 86), PTE Academic 60 with no skill below 60, CAEL 70 with no component below 60, or Duolingo 120 with no subscore below 95; results must be dated within two years of the program start date. The program page states no further academic prerequisite, GPA, portfolio, interview, or work-experience condition, and applicants are accepted on a first-qualified, first-accepted basis as long as space remains in the intake.

Application Details

Start Date: January, April and September
Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own.
