Overview
This bachelor's degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice is delivered on the Ottawa campus. It examines penal and transformative justice, processes of criminalization and surveillance, crime prevention, policing, courts, sentencing, and corrections, drawing on law, psychology, and sociology as foundational disciplines and supplementing them with political science, Indigenous studies, critical race studies, gender studies, and sexuality studies. Students choose one of three concentrations, Law, Sociology, or Mind and Behaviour, while receiving instruction across all three areas. Field placements are available in settings such as the Crown Attorney's Office, criminal law offices, and social justice organizations, and students can complete a thesis or project option in their final year. The program is designed for students entering from a range of educational backgrounds and prepares graduates for work in analysis, crime prevention, law enforcement, research, government and policy roles, and legal settings, as well as for further graduate study.

Admission Requirements: Criminology and Criminal Justice is a major within Carleton's Bachelor of Arts (BA). Ontario secondary school applicants apply through OUAC with an OSSD plus six 4U/M courses at the 4U level with no individual grade below 60%; Carleton's BA admission chart requires English for all BA majors, including Criminology and Criminal Justice, with no additional major-specific prerequisite course listed. Admission is competitive and based on the average of the required courses. International applicants apply through Carleton360 or OUAC 105 with transcripts equivalent to an Ontario secondary diploma and must meet Carleton's English-language proficiency standard unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 per band), TOEFL 4.5 overall (minimum 4.0 per band; 86 for tests taken before 21 January 2026), Duolingo 120, PTE Academic 55, CAEL 70, or Cambridge C1/C2 176.
