Finance is a concentration within Carleton University's Bachelor of Commerce program, offered through the Sprott School of Business. The concentration examines how financial managers appropriately allocate a firm's capital to invest in value-enhancing projects, along with the management of investment risk. It has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program, reflecting alignment between the curriculum and the professional CFA body of knowledge. All students in the concentration complete Sprott's Employability Passport, a career development program that runs across the degree, and a co-op option is available for students who want work-integrated learning alongside coursework. The concentration prepares graduates for roles in corporate finance, investment management and related financial services fields. Coursework combines finance theory with applied analysis relevant to corporate and investment settings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), including its Accounting, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, International Business, Management, and Marketing concentrations, requires the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with six Grade 12 U or M courses. These must include 4U English, Advanced Functions, and either Calculus and Vectors or Mathematics of Data Management, with Calculus and Vectors preferred. Applicants who submit an English-language proficiency test may use it to also satisfy the 4U English prerequisite. Students do not choose a concentration until after first year, so all concentrations share this first-year entry standard. Advanced standing to second year or beyond normally requires an overall CGPA of 9.00 (B+) or higher. Direct entry to the co-op option additionally requires meeting the program's overall and prerequisite-course cut-off averages, full-time registration in the Honours program, and eligibility to work in Canada. Admission averages are set each year on a program-by-program basis and the minimum only establishes eligibility for consideration.
