History and Theory of Architecture is offered as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) through Carleton University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The program examines architecture and cities across history, from the prehistoric period to the present day, through analysis of visual and textual sources and material culture, with attention to social and cultural context. Coursework includes early modern Asian and Islamic art and architecture, as well as Canadian and North American Indigenous architecture. Students develop visual literacy and critical-thinking skills for analyzing architecture within broader historical and social environments. The program combines art-historical and architectural-historical methods rather than design training, preparing graduates for further study or careers in heritage, curation, research, education, and related fields that draw on architectural history.
