Carleton's Master of Architectural Studies (MAS) is a research-based, non-accredited degree intended for students who want to pursue an in-depth investigation of a specific question in architecture rather than complete a professional design degree. Housed in the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, the program develops independent scholarship and research skills under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, drawing on multidisciplinary approaches to architectural history, theory, and related fields. It is a two-year, full-time program with a single Fall admission intake. Because the degree is non-accredited, it does not lead to professional licensure; instead, it functions as preparation for further academic study, including doctoral programs, or for research-oriented careers connected to the built environment. Students typically complete coursework alongside a substantial research project addressing their chosen area of architectural concern.
