The Master of Arts in International Affairs / Juris Doctor at Carleton University is a combined degree administered jointly by the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) and the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law; applicants must apply to and be accepted by both institutions. The program is designed for students with a strong interest in international law and relations, combining a legal education that prepares graduates for entry into the practice of law with the research training of the MA in International Affairs. Areas of expertise include conflict resolution and security, terrorism and intelligence, international trade and finance, and international governance and development. Students choose from coursework, research essay, or thesis pathways, with co-op and internship options for experiential learning. Based in Ottawa, NPSIA gives students direct engagement with Canada's international policy community. The program runs over a nominal four years of full-time study, delivered in person with a Fall intake, and prepares graduates for careers in government, international law, and international affairs.
