Overview
The Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary graduate program examining gender through critical frameworks including feminist, disability, sexuality, and critical race studies. Students engage with feminist theory, methodology, and analysis while developing research skills for academic and community contexts. The degree is offered through Coursework, Major Research Essay, and Thesis pathways. A collaborative Specialization in Accessibility and a collaborative Specialization in African Studies and Latin American and Caribbean Studies are available. Based in Ottawa, students have access to non-governmental organizations, feminist grassroots organizations, unions, government agencies, and crown corporations such as the International Development Research Centre, Health Canada, and the Department of Justice. The program is delivered in person, 2 years full-time, with admission in the Fall term.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The normal requirement for admission is a BA Honours degree in Women's and Gender Studies or a related area with high honours standing. Applicants who have completed a degree with a significant focus on gender and gender-related coursework from disciplines including Sociology, History, English, Philosophy, Anthropology, Canadian Studies and Political Science will also be considered. Applicants without a BA Honours degree in Women's and Gender Studies but with a three-year degree and a Women's and Gender Studies major or minor (minimum average B+) may be required to complete a qualifying year of full-time study before proceeding to the Master's program.
