Program details

Overview

Sciences humaines is a two-year pre-university DEC spanning seven disciplines, anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology, intended to prepare informed, critically engaged citizens for university study. All students share a common first-year core, introductory psychology, world history since the 15th century, sociology, global economics and social-science research methods, followed by political regimes, world geography, anthropology of cultural diversity and qualitative research methods, before choosing a profile partway through the second session. In the Action sociale, justice et environnement profile, students examine current social issues and the range of solutions that governments, social groups and individuals can bring to them, building toward more advanced electives on social innovation, sociological inquiry into precarity and solidarity, and societal crisis. Graduates in this profile can continue toward university studies in the broader social sciences and helping professions. The program can also be combined as a double DEC with Arts visuels, Cinema et communication, Danse, Langues, Litterature or Musique, and integrates eco-citizenship components into select courses.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This two-year Préuniversitaire program is non-quota: applications that meet its conditions are generally admitted. Prerequisites depend on the profile chosen partway through the first year: the Mathématiques, économie et société profile requires TS or SN Mathematics from 5th secondary (or Mathematics 526); every other profile requires CST Mathematics from 4th secondary (or Mathematics 416). General admission still runs through Cégep de Saint-Laurent's own conditions applied for through SRAM (a DES, a DEP plus the specified 5th-secondary language and 4th-secondary mathematics passes, or judged-equivalent training). Across every program at the Cégep, school-record quality is the main selection criterion: for secondary-school applicants that means 4th- and 5th-secondary results as they stand when they apply, and college-level results count too for anyone who has already attended a cégep.
