Overview
Techniques professionnelles de musique et chanson is a three-year technical DEC in popular music, designed as an immersion program intended to prepare students to enter the music job market directly after graduating. Students choose one of two specializations: interpretation, or arrangement and composition. The program offers performance opportunities at festivals such as the Festival des harmonies du Québec, the Montreal Jazz Fest, MusicFest, and the Festival Classica, as well as in campus events and productions. Facilities include two music-technology labs with iMac workstations and industry software, two recording studios with a live room and control room adjoining the concert hall (Salle Desjardins), soundproof rooms for individual and ensemble practice, and a large music library holding books, scores, and periodicals. All instruments are accepted, and some can be borrowed from the department; specialized equipment includes amplifiers, microphones, monitors, and reverb and sound systems. Students take part in master classes with visiting artists, campus performance events, and outings to concerts, shows, and recording studios. It suits students aiming for a professional career as a performing or recording popular musician.

Admission Requirements: Techniques professionnelles de musique et de chanson's admissions page states no secondary course prerequisite beyond the college's general secondary-diploma requirement, but makes admission conditional on a live audition held around mid-March for candidates whose files are accepted, with a preparatory workbook provided; applicants must indicate their instrument choice using the SRAM admission code for the program. Applicants qualify with a Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES) from the youth or adult sector, or a Diplôme d'études professionnelles (DEP) plus passes in fifth-secondary language of instruction, fifth-secondary second language and fourth-secondary mathematics, or training the Cégep judges equivalent. No distinct English- or French-language test score is set; language ability is covered by those fifth-secondary language courses.
