College of the North Atlantic's Personal Care Attendant program is a two-semester certificate preparing students to provide direct, hands-on support to clients with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and cognitive challenges. Training covers holistic, client-centred care across home support, long-term care, hospital, and hospice settings, combining classroom instruction with skills labs and supervised practicum placements. Students learn personal care routines, mobility assistance, basic health monitoring, and communication techniques for working with vulnerable populations. The program is delivered through a mix of blended and on-campus formats depending on campus location. Before starting practicum placements, students must complete a criminal record and vulnerable sector check, hold current Standard or Intermediate First Aid and CPR (BLS) certification, and provide two non-family reference letters along with proof of at least 20 volunteer service hours completed within the past two years. Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles supporting personal care in community, residential, and health-care settings across Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.
