PhD in Music: Performance Studies (D.Mus.)

The Doctor of Music in Music: Performance Studies is offered by the Schulich School of Music. The research-intensive program explores performance practice in its broader humanistic and scientific contexts through master classes and seminars, encouraging critical engagement with music. Artistic research may take the form of score and work analysis, examination of performance itself, or the creation of new works. Students collaborate across disciplines through IPLAI and CIRMMT, and may network with the European Conservatory Artistic Research group, while receiving mentoring from internationally recognized coaches and faculty in the Department of Music Research. Facilities include several performance spaces, research and production laboratories, two libraries with extensive music resources, and CIRMMT, an inter-institutional research centre with six dedicated research labs and work spaces. The program develops critical reading, original thinking, and knowledge communication skills for careers in academia or industry, and admits students for the Fall term only.
