Offered by McGill University in Montréal, Canada, MA/MS in Information Studies is a master's degree in Library Science programme. Tuition for international students is CAD 1,094 per credit (CAD 104 per credit for local students).
Information Studies (Non-Thesis): Course Work is a 48-credit Master of Information Studies offered by the School of Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts, and it is accredited by the American Library Association. The program is built around the intellectual foundations needed for careers as information professionals, including competencies in managing information and knowledge resources, supporting equitable access to information, applying technology appropriately to information needs, and understanding research methods used in library and information studies, alongside a stated commitment to professional service for individuals, organizations, and society. Eighteen credits of required coursework cover the foundations of information studies and its research methodologies, the organization and representation of information, information system design, information behaviour and information resources, and the management of information organizations, including topics such as strategic planning and human-capital management. Additional complementary courses, ranging from 18 to 30 credits, let students build further depth or breadth around these core areas. As a coursework-based, non-thesis, ALA-accredited degree, the program suits students preparing for professional roles in libraries, archives, or other information and knowledge-management organizations rather than for further research-focused graduate study.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: The Master of Information Studies admissions page states that applicants need a bachelor's degree from a recognized university with academic standing of at least a B, or 2nd class upper division, normally a CGPA of 3.0/4.0; admission into the MISt is competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. GRE scores are not required. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate adequate proficiency: the School's minimum accepted IELTS score is an overall band of 7.5 with at least 7.5 in the written component; the School also accepts TOEFL iBT, though its published minimum reads as an unusually low figure and should be confirmed directly with the School before relying on it. Competency in standard computer use (file management, word processing, presentation software) is also expected. The programme's Fall intake opens for applications on September 15, with a January 15 deadline for both Canadian and international applicants.
