The Powerline Technician apprenticeship trains students to construct, maintain and repair overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems, and to diagnose problems such as power disturbances or storm damage. NAIT has delivered the program since the 1970s; technical instruction is delivered on campus in labs designed to recreate real-world working conditions. Coursework covers erecting and maintaining steel, wood or concrete poles, towers and guy wires, installing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground power lines, cables, insulators and conductors, operating heavy equipment such as aerial booms, diggers, backhoes, trackhoes, nodwells, tension stringing equipment and skid steers, splicing, soldering and insulating conductors, using wiring diagrams and testing instruments to identify defective transmission equipment, and working safely at heights, including live-line maintenance on energized power lines. On completion, apprentices receive a Journeyperson Certificate and an Advanced Diploma from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), typically leading to careers with utility companies and their contractors.
