The Steamfitter-Pipefitter Apprenticeship First Period is offered at Northern Lakes College's Slave Lake campus as part of Alberta's structured apprenticeship system, combining technical training with employer-based on-the-job experience under a sponsoring employer. The period covers workplace safety and rigging, tools, equipment and materials, metal fabrication, drawing and specification reading, and trade calculations and science, alongside lab and shop work. Training is delivered in a face-to-face learning environment at the campus, with student housing available at select locations. Graduates of the full steamfitter-pipefitter apprenticeship work in residential, commercial and industrial settings, and can pursue Red Seal certification as a steamfitter-pipefitter, gasfitter, plumber or sprinkler systems installer. Northern Lakes College's own page covers only the First Period of this trade; later periods are completed elsewhere in the apprenticeship system.
