Overview
The Carpenter Apprenticeship is an on-campus trades program delivered in Grande Prairie, Alberta, through the Construction Trades department in the School of Skilled Trades, combining employer-based on-the-job training with periods of technical classroom instruction. Technical training is organized into four eight-week periods. Coursework covers constructing, erecting, and repairing buildings and other structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel, and other materials, across residential, commercial, industrial, and maintenance settings. Training includes exterior and interior finishing, remodeling, and other specialized carpentry tasks. Students register as apprentices through Alberta's Tradesecrets system, which governs eligibility, progression, and scheduling of technical training periods. Admission requires meeting Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training eligibility standards, along with minimum secondary-level English and mathematics standing, equivalent GED or Canadian Adult Education Credential results, or a passing score on the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training entrance exam. The program includes a work-integrated learning component through the apprenticeship structure itself, alternating classroom instruction with employer-based work terms.
